GACP Training Programs Offered for Alberta Herb and Spice Growers and Wildharvesters

The Canadian Herb, Spice and Natural Products Coalition (CHSNC) invites all interested growers and wildharvesters to participate in upcoming Good Agriculture and Collection Practices (GACP) training sessions in January and February 2010.

The voluntary CHSNC On-Farm Food Safety GACP Program covers culinary and medicinal herbs (cultivated and wildharvested), spice and hemp crops and natural health products. Many buyers are already asking to purchase raw materials produced under a GACP system. Growers/collectors who participate in this training will benefit greatly by reducing risks on their farms or wildharvesting operations, ensuring food/botanical safety and improving traceability throughout the entire value chain.

The CHSNC GACP training will help you work through and customize the GACP Workbook for your farm or operation. It is NOT a production manual, but a workbook including checklists (proposed SOPs – Standard Operating Procedures) to help you check and document the processes and procedures involved in growing, harvesting and tracking safe food/botanical products on your farm or wildharvest operation. The GACP Workbook covers: Plant/Product identification, Pest Control Products, Purchasing, Production, Post harvest processing, Personnel training, Preventative maintenance and Record Keeping. GACPs are really about ‘saying what you do’, ‘doing what you say you do’ and ‘verifying that you did what you said you were going to do’.

The CHSNC GACP training is offered in partnership with ARRGO and ARD and funded by Alberta Growing Forward program.

Please use the "Contact" link to inquire about attending the course. All participants must be ARRGO members or must be willing to join the Saskatchewan Herb and Spice Association. Pre-registration required.
